Holus -- Attempting to Heal, Again

Day 197 of the Crane’s Year

I readied myself to discuss whatever pertinent topic my goddess had for me as I felt my body rising. Surprisingly, I didn't turn into a ball of light.

More surprisingly, the rising sensation abruptly halted and I opened my eyes to find that I lay in the market square. A throbbing orange light illuminated the cobblestone square, catching in bits of smoke particulate.

“Fire?” I asked, numbly, as my vision swam into focus, and I became aware that I was staring at someone's face above me.

“You're not Galifini,” I said in confusion.

The creature chuckled and said, “Not last I checked. Name's Balek. I'd offer you to shake your hand, but, well, take your time.”

Balek seemed strangely inhuman, though I could see from his lack of red eyes that he at least wasn't a creature of madness. The fact that he spoke, I realized numbly, should have clued me into that one. He had wide high cheekbones, large green-colored eyes, and a mouth that seemed surprisingly small for how broad his face was.

The strangest thing about him, though, wasn't the large eyes, the high cheekbones, or the small mouth. It was the fur.

A short, fine brown fur swaddled Balek's features tighter than a bedsheet. And though when he turned, I could see that he'd drawn the mass of lanky brown hair back into a ponytail-style formation, I could see strands of it had come undone and dangled about his face, like small streams of water dripping off of a large wet rock.

I went to nod, then found the pain too extreme. Instead of nodding, I closed my eyes against the lights that were popping in them from the exertion.

“Your husband's awake, Avril.” Balek called out in a voice that was so loud it made my ears throb and my head pound. It even set my stomach to gurgling.

“How?” I muttered, feeling my jaw ache with the effort. “How long was I out?”

“Several hours,” Balek said pleasantly, as though he loved being the first thing that recently-unconscious men saw when they finally woke.

I heard a distant cry of excitement and Balek turned his face back to mine. I had to admit, his small mouth seemed to widen to widths that it wouldn't have normally occupied when he smiled. Seeing him smile, aside from the fact of his fur-colored features, I almost thought him human.

“All of the night and most of the morning,” he said briskly, before his mouth ceased smiling and it returned that small thin line. He glanced to his left, nodded and said, “He's all yours, mercenary Avril.”

I felt the long thin strands of his hair brush across my face as he moved out of the way. Then pain racked through me, worse than any I'd ever felt. Sharp, hot stabs of it landed on my cheeks, nose, lips, forehead, even my closed eyelids.

Avril never had been one for subtlety.

“I'm alright, my love. I'm alright.” I managed to mutter when Avril finally stopped attacking me.
